You use to be able to do an option restore and select an IPSW image.  Is this still possible, and where can you get the latest IPSW's?

Someone needs to correct me if i am wrong but i dont think i am.

Back in the old days the signing of firmware depended on SHSH blobs. If you had your blobs saved and Cydia in your host file, you could go up and down firmware as often as you liked.

With the implementation of iOS 6 came the apt-ticket which was needed as well as your blobs to be able to go up and down firmware which turned out to be the killer.

At one point there was a way to once again go up and down firmware but the window was closed by Apple pretty quickly.

This leads us to iOS 7. Just like iOS 6 it has done away with the SHSH blobs and taken on the apt-ticket way of allowing updates over iTunes.

I think you're talking about something else.  It use to be that you could hold down the option key and click restore in iTunes.  It would then allow you to pick an IPSW image that you downloaded elsewhere.  So instead of downloading the IPSW from Apple, you could use you own IPSW image.

You can get the IPSW images here:

They list them in case someone has SHSH blobs to stitch into the IPSW

no as long as you are using the IPSW for the latest iOS for you device, not a problem you can readily download and use the IPSW to restore/upgrade , etc. it is very handy as downloading IPSW thru itunes can be unstable and stuff, plus u need to  have said idevice on hand at moment, etc. etc. just push ctrl + restore or maybe its shift + restore

and like @ T0XicGreif3r they list the non current ones in case someone wants to use them for stitching or maybe like the ios 6.6.1 jb whih requires u to dl ios 6.0 IPSW

Confused.  Let's say I'm running 7.06, and now my iPhone doesn't boot anymore.  Can I download the 7.06 IPSW and restore my iPhone?  No blobs.

No here's the trick

You would have mobile substrate installed from cydia.

Than when your device doesn't boot, put it in dfu mode, and after that press the power button with the volume up button and keep holding the volume up button but you can let go of the power button. ;) all your cydia tweaks will be temporarily disabled, it's like safemode but safer.... lol
