You can't do it on nonjailbroken you can install something called linktunes which is a tweak on the iTunes store which you can download songs and it will be in your music.app.

Well music is stored in:

/var/root/Media/iTunes_Control/Music

While you can copy stuff there it won't be recognized by the iPod app on the iPhone. All the tracks (synced from iTunes) are renamed with random filenames. I assume the iPod app uses iTunesDB to reference the actual tracks.

Or wait for PwnTunes for iOS 8 to come out because then you can do it that way.

I use iSkySoft Tunesover for Mac

When i had Windows i swore by this. The managing music is free so you don't need all the rest but the full suite can be downloaded here in torrent form.

These both work with jailbroken and more importantly UNjailbroken devices

You could also try PP25, the chinese app that lets you install cracked apps. Install the computer version and it lets you manage your music from there. I also cosign the LinkTunes thing, that works.

If the thing that you don't like about iTunes is syncing then you can opt out of that and change the settings so that you manage your music manually. Then just create a folder with the music you want and turn on "autofill". So when you add music, it will just be that added to your phone rather than having to wait for a fully-blown syncing process.
